redsugar's garden - 2001

The parade of tulips. I knew this was going to be pretty, but it ended up being completely overwhelming. People driving past would stop, and walk up, ring the doorbell, and tell me how beautiful it was. There are roughly 550 bulbs on each side of the curvy front walk. When winter is this long and this cold, you really need a lot of color to let you know it's spring.

Tulips, daffodils, crocuses, and snowdrops. Mostly tulips, obviously. My favorite. And every color, style, and size under the sun.

The viridifloras are my favorite, so of course I have no pictures of them. They have quite a bit of green on them, streaked up the petals from below, with the most incredible colors filling in the rest. They are utterly stunning.

I'll eventually have these photos color-corrected. The colors were fantastic, bright and beautiful, but not nearly this garish. A lot of prurples and oranges, but nothing neon, and plenty of pastels.

The first rose of the year.

The first peony.
(Sarah Bernhardt)

The first irises...

The first lily...

The first daylily...
(Chicago Picotee)

The first clematis...
(John Paul)

The first delphinium...
(Bluebird)

I suppose everyone has their own rose. I have my grandparents' roses in the garden (substitutes, because I'm so far north), and my mom has her father's in her garden. Well, this one is mine. Westerland.

Pinup Flame and Pinup Rose Begonias in baskets

Apricot begonia and red impatiens - so many people asked me if these were fake, I wanted to put up a sign...

Flutterbye. I don't normally like singles, but the crayon yellow of this one caught my eye...

This is the only geranium I really like, and I absolutely love it. It's a Martha Washington variety, but I'm not sure which one. It's perfectly stunning - even moreso in person.

I just love lilies...

Red and yellow begonias, pink and white impatiens

Miss Canada Lilac. She blooms late, but she's worth waiting for - lovely color and scent...
